NHHS - Study Area

The study area corridor is 62 miles of existing rail line, which is owned and operated by Amtrak. It begins in New Haven at Union Station and continues through several towns and the cities of Meriden and Harford, ending at Union Station in Springfield, Massachusetts. The line is commonly referred to as the “Springfield Line.”

In addition to the Springfield Line right-of-way, the study area includes various intersections and road segments near existing and proposed stations, the property occupied by each station, and a shuttle bus connection to Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks. It should be noted that the 2005 Implementation Plan acknowledged that the capital cost of providing a rail connection to the airport using an existing freight spur was too great and the service would be provided with bus transportation.
